World Mental Health Day: Nurturing Minds, Fostering Resilience.

October 10th: A Global Reminder to Prioritise Mental Well-being

In an increasingly interconnected world, where the pace of life seems to quicken with each passing day, the importance of mental health cannot be overstated. It is a cornerstone of our overall well-being, influencing how we think, feel, and interact with the world around us. Recognizing this, World Mental Health Day, observed on October 10th every year, stands as a powerful reminder to prioritize mental health and dismantle stigmas associated with it.

We have some fabulous ambassadors for Mental Health Awareness right here in The Holistic Directory and Journal. One such gentleman is Henry Ainsley, aka The Bearded Runner, who has experienced first-hand, the devastating impact male suicide has had on a family.

After the loss of his brother and the growing number of male suicides worldwide Henry went about taking to the streets with his passion for running to raise awareness about the vital importance of good mental health. Henry runs for Andy’s Mans Club and The Jet Singh Trust.

I’ve experienced, first-hand, the devastating impact male suicide has on a family. As a carpenter and a runner, I’ve been able to find solace in both activities, even in the darkest moments. I’m determined to bring the difficult and sometimes taboo subject of suicide to the forefront, to find new ways to engage men, to help them open up and prevent needless deaths.

I caught up with Henry as he shares his top tips on the building blocks to keeping your mental health in good shape as well as signs to look out for in others who may be suffering.

Building Blocks - The Foundations Of Resilience

If we can keep working on these very simple building blocks everyday we will build resilience if any darker times come.

  1. Brush your teeth/ hair (aside from the hygiene aspect) this is one of the most important things to do to set up your day. It allows you to take a mindful moment and bring awareness to starting your day doing something positive for your health.

  2. Eating Healthy - as the saying goes.. we should eat breakfast like a King, lunch like a Prince and dinner like a pauper. Eating breakfast will start up your engine and get you moving in the direction you need to go.

  3. Dressing Well - Whatever you like to wear ensure your clothes are clean and feel good to you. It doesn’t matter the style as long as it’s your style and they make you feel good. Smart clothing sets you in a mood for success.

  4. Washing your face/ showering will set you up to feel super energised and ready for the day ahead. Water is one of the most healing tools available not only to drink but to immerse in as well. Even better, blast a cold shower and you will really feel the difference.

  5. Good Nights Sleep - I can’t emphasise this enough really. You need a good night sleep to function properly. Recommended 8 hours for us to repair and fully rest. These are simple procedures to put in place that will offer the world of difference to how you feel long term.

Breaking the Stigma

One of the most critical aspects of World Mental Health Day is the effort to combat the stigma surrounding it. In many societies, misconceptions and prejudices about mental health conditions persist, leading to discrimination, isolation, and even neglect for those who need support.

Initiatives on this day work to normalise conversations about mental health, emphasising that it is an integral part of our overall health. Sharing personal experiences, professional insights, and disseminating accurate information all contribute to fostering an environment of empathy and understanding.

Nurturing Minds: The Power of Supportive Communities

Community support plays a pivotal role in mental health. It provides a safety net for individuals struggling with mental health issues, offering a space where they can seek understanding, empathy, and practical assistance. World Mental Health Day serves as a catalyst for communities to come together and foster an environment that nurtures mental well-being.

Activities range from educational workshops and seminars to art therapy and support groups. These initiatives not only provide valuable information but also create spaces where individuals can express themselves freely, unburdening their hearts and minds.

One such venue recently opening it’s doors to just this is The Worthing Soup Kitchen Hub Cafe. They not only offer their Community Fridge to prevent food waste but also regular meet ups and a safe space for people to connect.

You will also find help and support right here within The Holistic Directory as our ambassadors are such as Henry are always happy to connect and be a safe space for support.

Raising Awareness: Education as a Beacon of Light

Education is a powerful tool in the fight against mental health issues. World Mental Health Day endeavours to equip individuals with knowledge about mental health, its common disorders, and strategies for maintaining well-being. Schools, workplaces, and communities organise seminars, panel discussions, and awareness campaigns to spread accurate information about mental health.

Empowering people with the knowledge to recognise signs of distress in themselves and others is an essential step towards early intervention and support. Furthermore, teaching coping mechanisms and resilience-building techniques helps individuals navigate life’s challenges with grace and fortitude.

Henry offered some quick signs to look out for if there is someone you are concerned about:

  1. Withdrawing

  2. Not taking care of their appearance

  3. Not eating properly

  4. Staying in bed all day

  5. Scrolling on their phone

  6. Low Mood

  7. Isolating themselves

We can all experience low days but if you or someone you love is displaying these signs then it is important to reach out to someone. We will list some great resources at the end of this article or you may find them listed within our directory pages.

Connecting Virtually: The Digital Frontier

In recent times, the digital landscape has become an invaluable platform for mental health advocacy. Social media campaigns, webinars, and online support groups have expanded the reach and accessibility of World Mental Health Day. This virtual dimension allows people from diverse backgrounds and geographies to come together, share experiences, and access resources.

The internet has also played a crucial role in reducing isolation, especially during times when physical distancing measures are in place. It ensures that support and resources are available to those who may otherwise face barriers in seeking help.

I hope that this Mental Health Day we are able to once more highlight and bring people together to discuss, share and support one another.
